At Ingøy you find the northernmost pottery in the world: Arctic Workshop. The pottery was founded in 1990 by Erling Skarv Johansen, who came from Lofoten as a teacher in 1978. He started the workshop with two empty hands and without any grounding. Today the pottery has the largest selection in Norway with more than 300 different products, the majority of own design. The selection comprises everything from cups, mugs, plates, vases, dishes, bowls, shell, lighthouses, candles etc. They have more than 100 unique fishes and seabirds which are selfdesigned. The comorant is the most important article.
The production is inspired by the beautiful and rough nature – both in design and colours (mostly blue). None of the articles look the same because everything is 100% handmade and unique. They also make some sculptures exhibited in the workshop in stoneware besides the regular production.
The workshop is open every day the whole year, also in weekends. You may call there in advance and make an appointment, just to be sure. It is possible to buy all the arcticles and to watch them work. Guiding can be arranged. The local tourist office is in the workshop – both lying in the school building in the centre of Ingøy. Go to www.skarvenkeramikk.no for more information (only in Norwegian).
