::: Birdlife :::

More than 130 bird species have been observed at Ingøy. Many of them are nesting here: around the marsh, mountains and islets. The island is perfect for bird spotting, you can for instance watch more than 10 sea eagles at the same time if your lucky. Large colonies of nesting comorants, seagulls and wild goose are easy to spot. Many rare birds have been observed throughout the years.

The comorant has for centuries been looked upon as a “magic bird” to people living by the coast. People thought this elegant black dressed and mystical guardian of the ocean could predict both storms and bad luck. Earlier the coat, meat and the eggs of the comorant was used by the population. Even today the meat is considered a tasty experience. This bird is the symbol of freedom, identity and endurance to us – it chooses its own course at sea and afterwards it sits almost unshakeable on a small rock outmost facing the storm. After diving down to the bottom of the sea, down to 50 metres, you can watch him drying its wings, sitting like a cross in the horizon.
